Birds of South Africa

Posted on May 6, 2010 by Panikos under Uncategorized

As promised, I’ve finally got round to sorting out some images from SA. These are some of my favourite bird images. There are more, but I’ll save showing them for another day. These were taken in the beautiful Pilanesberg National Park.

Many people think that Ox Peckers just eat the ticks & insects off their hosts. In fact they often open up the wounds caused by the insects and feast on the blood! More of a parasite really!

The Liac Breasted Roller is probably one of the most beautifully coloured birds commonly seen in SA

The Yellow Fronted Canary is the same size as a sparrow, but so much prettier, wouldn’t you agree?

Just a few moments after this was taken, it came zooming past me with a fish in its beak. Although I got another photo of it in flight with the fish, it was half hidden behind a branch! Oh well!

All these photos were taken at the amazing Pilanesberg Game Reserve, more info at www.pilanesberg-game-reserve.co.za/

That’s it for now. More photos of animals will be coming soon. Now its back to work though.
